How to Apply and Remove Your Cervical Collar

Your surgeon may have prescribed a brace (cervical collar or C-collar) for you. The brace is designed to protect your spine while healing takes place.

The brace can be fitted before admission, or the first day after your spine surgery; it is usually worn for a minimum of four weeks at all times (except while in the shower).

Cervical Collar: Used to support your neck, and restrict motion.

How to Apply the Cervical Collar

  • To apply the collar, place the front panel of the cervical collar on your neck, under your chin. (See brace application picture step 1 and 2).
  • Bring the back panel to midline and then secure it in place with the Velcro strips on both sides. (See brace application picture step 3 and 4).
  • For proper fit, collar should be snug under your chin, but should not restrict breathing or eating.
  • To confirm a proper fit, look in the mirror to verify that the collar is centered and that your head is aligned straight. If not, loosen the Velcro straps and readjust the fit. If the collar does not fit properly, contact your surgeon’s office. (See brace application picture step 5 and 6).

How to Remove the Cervical Collar/ Collar Maintenance

  • When removing the collar, remove the Velcro strap on one side to release and remove the collar.
  • If any of the pads become soiled, they can be washed by hand using warm water and mild soap, then air dried. Do NOT use bleach or other chemicals.
