Instructions for Post-Contrast Metformin Patients
As a patient currently receiving a Metformin containing drug, it is necessary for your physician to withhold your medication after your procedure that required an intravascular injection of radiographic iodinated contrast material.
***These instructions are based on recommendations provided by the American College of Radiology***
Outpatients

DO NOT resume your Metformin containing drug until you contact your physician and have them determine the status of your kidney function (this may or may not require a blood test).

Have your physician’s office inform you of the results and give you instructions regarding the restart of your Metformin therapy.

UNDER NO circumstances should you start your Metformin therapy until 48 HOURS AFTER your procedure.

HOLD all Metformin containing medications for 48 hours. Please inform attending physician of HOLD order and to obtain glucose management instructions.
